Welcome back to The Velvet Runway and this feature about A Tea-Lover’s Christmas Travel Guide.
I don’t know about you, but I am already incredibly excited about the next weeks. Neighbours have already started to put up Christmas decorations – and whilst I generally start setting things up a little bit closer to the date, I can’t help but feeling all cosy.
I love watching the warm fairy lights brighten up the afternoon and evening – ideally coupled with a comforting hot cuppa. And that got me thinking! How about celebrating my love for a good brew with a tea-themed journey?
For tea lovers, Christmas is the perfect time to explore new destinations that offer a delightful blend of tea culture and holiday cheer. Whether you prefer classic afternoon teas, unique tea experiences, or the festive atmosphere of Christmas markets, I have curated a list of enchanting places that will make your holiday season truly memorable.
A Tea-Lover’s Christmas Travel Guide
1. Choose a Destination Brewing with Tradition!
Of course, the most important thing first: Where to go? A lot of great destinations are known for their rich tea traditions – and consumption. You can head to famous ones like Darjeeling in India for a taste of exquisite Himalayan teas – or journey to Japan’s historic tea houses for a serene experience with matcha-infused festivities.
Nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas, Darjeeling is renowned for its world-famous tea plantations. With the backdrop of snow-capped mountains, this picturesque town offers tea lovers the opportunity to witness the tea-making process firsthand. Enjoy a cup of Darjeeling’s delicate and aromatic tea while taking in the breathtaking views and visiting historic tea estates. During Christmas, the streets come alive with vibrant markets, offering local crafts, spices, and festive treats.
Or you can experience the serene beauty of traditional Japanese tea houses and participate in a traditional tea ceremony, where you can learn about the art of preparing and appreciating matcha tea. During Christmas, Kyoto is adorned with beautiful illuminations and hosts charming markets where you can find unique tea-related gifts and seasonal delicacies.
But you don’t have to wander that far. You can discover the joy of festive afternoon teas easily wherever you go. Head to London, for example, and indulge in a classic English high tea with scones and sandwiches, and enjoy some incredibly delicious Christmas teas. Choose renowned establishments like The Ritz or Claridge’s for something quite exquisite. Alternatively, experience the charm of Viennese coffee houses, for example, offering special holiday tea menus!
2. Christmas Markets & Other Cultural Celebrations
The bonus an adventure around this time of year brings, are the Christmas markets. Exploring stalls can let you find unique blends, teaware, and tea-infused treats. Especially in countries, that are both vivid tea drinkers, as well as fantastic hosts for markets – like Germany.
Known for their cosy ambience, as well as a delightful selection of teas. If you go up to the north of the country, for example, you’ll find the traditions of Nordfriesland: Black tea with cream and “Kluntjes” – rock candy!
But if you’d like to go a bit further afield, in Morocco you can sample their famous sweet mint tea paired with delicious traditional holiday pastries. Or head to Russia for a warming cup of spiced chai, accompanied by festive sweets!
3. Unique Tea Souvenirs
The best thing to create memories, however, is to get incorporated into tea traditions, wherever you go. Attend tea ceremonies if you can, participate in workshops, and engage with locals!
And don’t forget to bring a piece of your tea journey home. Seek out local tea shops, artisanal markets, or quaint boutiques for something unique. Not only will they remind you of your travels – but they will come incredibly handy for your tea experiences back home.
Final words on A Tea-Lover’s Christmas Travel Guide
This Christmas, venture beyond the usual holiday destinations and embark on a tea lover’s journey to these enchanting places. Whether you choose to explore the tea plantations of Darjeeling, immerse yourself in Japanese tea ceremonies in Kyoto, enjoy a traditional British tea experience or immerse yourself in the festive spirit by visiting the Christmas markets that offer an array of tea-related gifts, local crafts, and seasonal treats, you are sure to find a tea-lover’s treat.
