The price of groceries, transportation, dining out, and activities are affordable and the cost of rent and housing is beyond reasonable. Additionally, Lisbon offers a comfortable climate of mild winters and warm summers. This means that you can enjoy free outdoor activities year-round and avoid spending money on indoor entertainment.
Budapest, Hungary
Like Lisbon, Budapest is a European country that offers beautiful sights and a low cost of living.
In Budapest, you can find a centrally located (highly sought after) apartment for about €400-600 per month. Groceries, transportation, and activities are below average compared to the rest of the country and the city has a vibrant arts scene full of free museums and architecture. With love,
I’m going to talk about my country’s capital, Lisbon. It has all these advantages for foreigners, but it has disadvantages for the Portuguese who live here: houses are very expensive, there are no houses available on the market for young couples who want to start a family. The cost of living for the Portuguese is high because they earn low salaries! And this is happening in every Portuguese city! We simply can’t compete with the golden pensions of foreigners!

Thanks for sharing this, Marisa. I can understand how frustrating that must be for the local population, especially not being able to afford a starter home. However, I believe that the non-habitual residency (NHR) tax regime that gave a 10-year tax break for foreigners moving to Portugal ended last December so I think that will reduce the influx of expats.
I agree about Portugal. A friend told me that you’re freed from taxes during your first year…Now, isn’t that a dream!
I would add Valetta on Malta. It’s especially great choice for English natives because everyone speaks English!
Split in Croatia is becoming increasingly popular with ex pats and digital nomads and Sofia in Bulgaria is an attractive choice as well.
Hi Ivana, thanks for adding these great places! I agree that Valetta is a great addition to the list. Not only does everyone speak English but the weather is good too! I haven’t been to Split (although I have been to Croatia) or Sofia so I will have to add them to my bucket list! xo
