Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and if you’re thinking of a romantic proposal, then you may want to consider buying a customised engagement ring.
Things to consider when choosing a customised engagement ring
Aside from Ben Affleck who proposed to Jennifer Lopez with a pink diamond engagement ring, many others seeking for successful proposals also want to invest in a piece to reflect this personal event. But, did you know that pink diamonds are more expensive than white diamonds, with the finest quality pink diamonds valued at as much as fifty to a hundred times more than the price of a standard white diamond.
At the topmost rung of the diamond industry are Argyle pink diamonds, which are considered beyond rare. Because of their rarity and value, pink diamonds are also among the most desired precious gemstones in the world and they can command a high price.
Also adding to the soaring prices for the Argyle pink diamond is the imminent closure of the Argyle mine, which means that the remaining number available for purchase have become more limited too. Argyle diamonds comprise the majority of the pink diamonds mined worldwide (90%). Additionally, the mine only releases 100 carats of Argyle pink diamonds to the market annually. So not only does this add up to make the Argyle pink one of the products that are most exclusive in the world but it rationalizes the rapidly increasing price for such.
The Argyle Pink Diamonds Colour Grading System
The discovery of Argyle pink diamond over three decades ago in the Kimberly region of Australia launched fancy coloured diamonds into public awareness. This variety stands out with its vivid hue, which is a deep and intense pink rarely seen from other pink diamonds.
An Argyle pink diamond’s value is assessed using a grading system for colour that is comprised of 35 different registered colour grades, each covering an extensive variety of tones produced by the said mine. With the Argyle colour grading system, the diamonds are graded from 1 to 9 (darkest to lightest) in red, pure pink (P), champagne pink (PC), purple pink, and (PP) rose pink (PR). Based on this system, the Argyle pink with the most intense tone and saturation is also the most expensive.
Purchasing Pink Argyle Diamonds
In buying a pink diamond, it is challenging to find one that perfectly matches your requirements because of the precious stone’s limited supply. This means that it is nearly impossible to find the exact diamond you want and thus you must be willing to accept the closest possible match. Make sure you buy from credible sources such as http://diamondqueensland.com.au/.
In addition to considering Argyle diamonds that come with original Australian Argyle Certificate or Argyle parcel lot number, it is important for buyers of fancy coloured diamonds to understand the colour characteristics that determine their value. For Argyle diamonds, its hue (dominant colour), tone (amount of light or darkness), and saturation (the strength of hue) determine its value. In addition to its main hue, a pink diamond may possess an overtone (secondary colour) of brown, orange, or purple. The secondary colour can also impact pricing such that a diamond with an overtone will probably be priced slightly lesser than one without an overtone.
In assessing an Argyle diamond, the C that stands for colour outweighs the three other Cs (cut, clarity, and carat weight), which are used in grading and valuing colourless diamonds. In the case of Argyle pink, their value increases as the intensity of the colour increases. Clear discrepancies in prices are seen among different colour grades. For example, the price gap between a Fancy Intense Pink and a Fancy Vivid Pink will be significant, with the latter rounding up six digit figures and the former only approximating to a five-digit price tag.

What a fun article to read. I know a fair amount about diamonds and do know the value of a pink diamond. But I’ve never heard of the Argyle pink . I do know that white diamonds less than 3 carat are actually not even rare. The prices are controlled by a sort of monopoly.
For investment I agree that colored diamonds are wonderful. That is, if you can afford one!
