Welcome back to the Velvet Runway and this feature about Country or city living: What’s the right choice for you?
Choosing a location to relocate isn’t always easy but the majority of us tend to have a preference when it comes to either living in the city or the countryside. While some seek the tranquillity and beauty of the countryside, others favour the thriving scene of the city.
If you’re at a crossroads between the two, don’t worry. Here are some things to consider that should help you to weigh up your options and make a decision.
Country or city living: What’s the right choice for you?
Housing and cost of living
Generally, the closer you live to the city, the higher the price will be for housing. Not only this but the cost of living is more expensive also, making it more difficult to save money for the future. Despite this, you’ll often find a wide variety of living accommodation available, including flats and houses to suit all preferences.
While housing options are more limited for country living, prices tend to be much more affordable, as well as the cost of living. These properties tend to be more spacious and include more land for the same price as a smaller urban residence, which is a great reason to contemplate buying a new home in the countryside.
Job opportunities and education
One of the main benefits of city life is the abundance of job prospects at your fingertips. Particularly for young people, there are more opportunities to progress your career across various industries. While career options are more limited in countryside areas, there is a higher possibility of remote work or entrepreneurship.
It’s important to assess what it is you want from your career: Are you wanting more or are you happy where you are at? You’ll then be in a better position to decide what location is best for you. You might be retired or planning to do so, in which this aspect won’t matter as much to you.
Transportation links and commuting
Cities will more often than not have a well-developed public transport system in place, including trains, buses and trams – or if in London, the Underground. This makes it much easier to make your way around the city and commute to work if need be, and is particularly useful if you don’t own a vehicle.
The only issue though is that city residents can find themselves stuck in traffic on a regular basis, possibly leading to delays. Finding parking can also be troublesome and expensive, even just for a few hours.
Rural areas may have limited or no transportation services at all, which can make travelling to work or other amenities difficult.
It’s likely that you’ll have to rely on personal vehicles to get around; however, country roads are much less congested, meaning your drives won’t be plagued by traffic and frustration (although they may be plagued by sheep!).
Final Thoughts on Country or city living: What’s the right choice for you?
There are several factors to take into account and your choice may depend on your current life situation. The younger generation tend to prefer city living because of the job opportunities as well as the wider entertainment options, whereas the older generation often opt for the calm and peace of the country with reduced stress, easier access to nature and a more supportive community. However, this is a personal decision and you will need to evaluate which feels the right choice for you.

With love,
They both have their pros and cons and it also really depends on the city. New for example is very dense so living there can be challenging. While a city like Seattle is more spread out with trees and grass and yards so you kind of both which can make it easier. I like the area of Paris my step family live in near the Bois de Boulogne.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts Allie, and I agree it really depends a lot on the city. I love cities that have a lot of parks and open spaces x
Hello
This is a great question, I like living in the countryside, but every now and then I like the frenzy of the city! Of course in the city there are much more opportunities in everything, jobs, exhibitions, shows etc, but the calm of the countryside and the reduced traffic is marvellous!

I agree – I love the calm of the countryside too but definitely need easy access to a big city!
