Guide to the 2nd arrondissement of Paris

Welcome back to The Velvet Runway and this feature with our Guide to the 2nd arrondissement of Paris by Parisian contributor, Hannah Rees.

Following our previous article on what to do and see in Paris’s 1st arrondissement, let’s carry on and have a look at what to do and see in the City of Light’s 2nd arrondissement!

The 2nd arrondissement is right in the center of the capital city and although it can sometimes be overlooked next to the impressive 1st arrondissement,  there’s still plenty to do and see in this area !

So let’s take a look at our guide to the 2nd arrondissement of Paris and where to visit, eat and stay.

Guide to the 2nd arrondissement of Paris

Nestled in the heart of Paris, the 2nd arrondissement is a dynamic district that blends history, culture, shopping, and gastronomy. Despite being one of the smallest arrondissements, it boasts a unique charm that attracts both locals and visitors. From historic covered passages to world-class dining, here’s what you shouldn’t miss in this lively area of Paris.

Bourse Paris

1. What to see and do in the 2nd arrondissement

Let’s start with the most obvious place, the Palais Brongniart which is also known as La Bourse. In fact, the whole area around it is often called that by Parisians! However, it can’t really be compared to Wall Street in NYC as it no longer operates as a stock exchange. But it’s still worth a visit because of its incredible architecture.

Galeries Vivienne Paris

The 2nd arrondissement is home to some of Paris’s most beautiful covered passages, offering a glimpse into 19th-century shopping arcades with stunning glass roofs and intricate decor.

  • Passage des Panoramas: One of the oldest covered passages in Paris, filled with antique shops, restaurants, and postcard vendors.
  • Galerie Vivienne: A breathtaking passage with mosaic floors, high-end boutiques, and cozy cafes.
  • Passage Choiseul: A lesser-known but charming passage lined with bookstores and quaint shops.

Another must-see when you’re in the 2nd arrondissement is the Place des Victoires ! It’s a very impressive sight with a statue of the French King Louis XIV right in the middle !

Now, if you love books, you need to stop at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, also called the Richelieu Library. And honestly, even if you aren’t a book worm, it’s worth a visit ! Not only is it a beautiful space but it has a ton of manuscripts, maps, and historical documents.

If you want the truly Parisian experience, you need to head over to Rue Montorgueil ! The great thing about it is that it’s a pedestrian street lined with cute shops as well as tons of bakeries and small boutiques.

Must-visit spots include:

  • Stohrer: The oldest pastry shop in Paris, famous for its mouthwatering baba au rhum.
  • L’Escargot Montorgueil: A classic French bistro renowned for its escargots.

Discover the Unique Sentier District : Once the hub of Paris’s textile industry, Sentier has transformed into a trendy area filled with co-working spaces, concept stores, and hip cafes. Wander through the charming streets and stop by:

  • Candelaria: A hidden cocktail bar tucked behind a small taco shop.
  • Daroco: A stylish Italian trattoria housed in a former Jean-Paul Gaultier boutique.

If you’re craving a bit of calm and relaxation, a hidden oasis in the city, the Jardin du Palais Royal is perfect for a peaceful escape. Surrounded by historic arcades, this garden is also home to the Colonnes de Buren, a striking black-and-white art installation that has become an iconic Instagram spot.

2. Where to shop in the 2nd arrondissement

Passage des Panoramas Paris

Ok, now onto shopping ! This is Paris afterall so no visit would be complete without visiting a few shops along the way because Paris is afterall, know for its fashion !

The first stop is the Passage des Panoramas. Remember when we mentionned the covered passages in Paris, well this is the oldest one in the whole city ! Just for that, it’s worth a visit. And on top of that, it’s home to a ton of vintage boutiques and unique little shops !

And if you like antique shops, you can also head to Le Grand Cerf, which is, as you probably guessed, another passage and as everything from contemporary fashion shops to the cutest vintage boutique !

And finally, if you want to do some serious shopping, head over to rue Etienne Marcel and the rue Montmarte as these are lined with shops!

3. Where to eat and drink in the 2nd arrondissement

Another very important element of any visit to Paris is obviously the food ! And if you’re in the 2nd arrondissement and you’re wondering where to eat, no worries, here are some great suggestions !

Le Bouillon Chartier is such an institution in Paris and that’s because it offers very traditional French food for affordable prices !

Another classic amongst Parisians is Le Grand Colbert which also serves very traditional dishes. Bistro Vivienne is a charming spot in Galerie Vivienne serving traditional French dishes in a cozy, elegant setting.

If you’re looking for a more casual experience, then head to Pizzeria Popolare – a lively Italian restaurant serving wood-fired pizzas and affordable wine in a fun atmosphere.

4. Insider tips for visiting the 2nd arrondissement.

Velib Paris

One of the great things about the 2nd arrondissement (and Paris in general) is that it’s very easy to get around on foot, and most of the things you’ll want to see are within a short distance of each other. That said, it’s best to wear comfortable shoes as the streets tend to be cobbled. And if you’re too tired, you can always hop on a city bike, a Vélib’, to explore the area.

As you may have already guessed, the 2nd arrondissement of Paris is full of covered passages so make sure you take the time to explore them because you will most certainly discover a few hidden gems !

This is a very artsy area (with lots of fabrics shops as well !) so make sure you keep an eye out for street art as you walk around !

And because it’s a bit less touristy than say, the 1st arrondissement, another thing that you want to do is make the most of local food markets (such as the one of Rue Montorgueil!).
