How to design your brand-new build

Welcome back to the Velvet Runway and this feature about How to design your brand-new build.

‘New builds’ are housing a huge proportion of the population. Statistics show that there were 171,190 new homes built in England alone, so there are plenty of individuals and families moving into newly built homes, looking to make them their own.

New build designs tend to be simple, modern and stripped-back – a blank canvas for homeowners to put their stamp on. While this can be a positive thing, some people may feel overwhelmed when it comes to knowing where to start. Designing a home can be a daunting prospect – but it doesn’t have to be.

Whether you are moving to a new build homes in Skegness near the beach or up north in a city like Greater Manchester, the likelihood is that it’ll need a touch of personality to feel like home.

Here are some ideas to help you get started with designing your brand-new build.

How to design your brand-new build

Define Your Style and Vision for your brand new build

Before diving into the details, take some time to define your style and vision for your home. Consider the atmosphere you want to create – cozy and traditional, sleek and modern, or perhaps a fusion of styles that reflects your eclectic taste.

Lighting

Lighting is an integral part of setting the mood within a space. Many interior experts recommend placing lamps around the room to help create a softer, more diffused light effect. However, some homeowners may want more practical lighting options like spotlights.

Choose from feature hanging lights, floor lamps and table lamps to not only assist the lighting setup but also elevate the room in terms of décor. Warm lighting tends to be favoured for creating a calming atmosphere, so this is something to bear in mind when buying the bulbs.

Colour

Much like lighting, colour can make a big difference to a space. New build homes tend to be painted white, which can make the place feel clinical and cold. On the plus side, this gives you a blank canvas to work with – this is your chance to go all out. You can do this with art, furniture, fabrics or of course, the walls.

Generally, it’s recommended that smaller, north-facing rooms are darker in colour to embrace a cosier interpretation of the space. This might involve painting the walls dark green or navy.

Meanwhile, larger rooms that receive a lot of light usually work well when they’re light and bright. However, the choice is entirely up to you and what you think will work best.

Accent walls

Accent or feature walls are a fun addition to any home and can add a touch of personality to the space. You could keep things simple with a painted wall or wallpaper, however, you could opt for other materials to add to the texture of the room. Why not go for reclaimed wood or even brick? Doing this can also help balance the tones in a room and warm it up slightly.

Accent Wall

Accent walls can help to break up the room – particularly one that is very neutral or plain. They can also complement other details in a room. As an example, a wooden accent on a wall could bring out detailed tiling on the bathroom floor.

Greenery

houseplants

House plants have blown up in recent years. A pop of green can make all the difference and it’s thought that they have calming qualities. Go for unusual succulents, hanging plants such as ivy or large statement plants that sit in a pot on the floor.

If you have a garden start with a budget as there is plenty of scope for flower beds or even a vegetable patch if the space allows it. Otherwise, if you only have a patio, you can place your focus on outdoor furniture and potted plants to liven up the space.

Final Thoughts on How to design your brand-new build

Remember that personalization is an ongoing process. As you settle into your new home, continue to add and adjust elements to reflect changes in your lifestyle and preferences. Regularly update decor, rearrange furniture, and refresh spaces to keep your home feeling dynamic and aligned with your evolving taste.

In conclusion, personalizing your new build home is an exciting journey that allows you to express your individuality and create a living space that truly feels like home. Take the time to thoughtfully consider each element, and enjoy the process of transforming your house into a haven that reflects your unique style and personality.
