Welcome back to The Velvet Runway and this feature about How to Host the Perfect Halloween Party.
We are now half-way through October, and as we are enjoying delicious pumpkin spiced lattes, Autumn colours and crisp Autumn mornings, we still have Halloween to look forward to! If you are not planning a Halloween trip to some spooktastic Halloween destinations, here are the key steps for How to Host the Perfect Halloween Party.
How to Host the Perfect Halloween Party
Hosting a Halloween party can be one of the most exciting and creative events to plan, especially with all the spooky and fun possibilities the holiday offers. Whether you’re going for eerie sophistication or a family-friendly gathering, here’s a guide to help you throw the perfect Halloween party.
1. Set the Theme
To get everyone in the Halloween spirit, pick a unique theme that drives the party’s décor, activities, and even costumes. Themes could include:
- Classic Haunted House: Cobwebs, candlelight, and eerie sounds to set the mood.
- Masquerade Ball: For an elegant, mysterious vibe, with guests in ornate masks.
- Monster Mash: A fun, kid-friendly vibe with classic movie monsters like Dracula and Frankenstein.
- Fright Night: Choose a horror movie or show, like a “Stranger Things” or “Hocus Pocus” theme.
Insider Tip: Choose a theme that fits your guest list’s interests and set the mood with matching invitations and décor.
2. Send Spooky Invitations
Start building excitement with creative invitations. Digital invites can be fun and eco-friendly, but if you want to go the extra mile, consider sending physical invitations in the shape of coffins, witches’ hats, or potions.
Include dress code information so guests know what to expect and come prepared for the theme.
3. Decorate to Impress
Halloween décor can transform any space into a spooky wonderland.
i) Decorate the porch/ the outside
Decorate the porch with pumpkins, fall colored flowers, fall vegetables, leaves and wreaths.
You can make this as spooky or as colourful as you like. If you’re short of inspiration, just collect as many pumpkins as possible in all different shapes, sizes and colors and line them up the steps or place them on a shelf.
You can also add spooky porch lights for that festive feel. Here are a few of my picks for porch and outdoor decor. Just click on the image to buy.
ii) Create a Stylishly Spooky Halloween ambiance
Fill the wall with flying bats, add a witches broom, pumpkins and candles for some spook appeal, and put haunted house lanterns on the side.
Alternatively, you can keep the focus on pumpkins and candles.
Consider piling pumpkins 🎃 on and aroud the fireplace and add a few candles to create a spooky ambiance.
Or you can opt for a more minimalistic decor as shown below.
Here are a few of my picks for indoor decor : just click on the image for more details.
iii) Use Spooky Lighting:
Use dim lighting, candles, and flickering lanterns to create an eerie atmosphere. String lights shaped like bats or pumpkins can add a playful touch.
A simple and cheap way to add some Halloween decor is to add some candles.
Your choice of candle influences the style of your decor from tall elegant pillars, to Yankee Candles through to tea lights, and choosing the right scent can make a huge impact on the overall ambiance of the room. There’s no shortage of scents to choose from and the right fragrance can change a dull ambiance into something enchanting and welcoming.
If you want to keep your candles beyond Halloween, opt for more minimalistic styles and scents that give a Fall/ Autumn vibe, such as pumpkin spiced latte, cinnamon, spiced apple or sandalwood.
If you want to go “all-in” for Halloween than you can find some more “scary” options, such as ghoul heads, floating eyeballs and skeleton/ ghost shaped candles.
As I said above, candles are a perfect addition to your Halloween decor, but there are also lots of other lighting options, both for indoors and outdoors.
You might want to change out your porch lights for more orange toned lights, and add some path lights to create atmosphere.
Garland lights are also a popular choice for both indoors and outdoors, and orange toned lighting is great for pumpkins and flames, and adding warmth.
Or, you could go “all-in” and create a spooky garden to welcome them.
iv) Incorporate Props
Incorporate cobwebs, fake skeletons, and carved pumpkins. For extra spookiness, invest in fog machines and creepy soundtracks for an immersive experience.
v) Set a stylishly spooky Halloween table
You can stay with the Autumn flowers and vegetables theme for the table decoration.
Or you can opt for a more spooky Halloween theme, which will be especially appreciated by the kids!
And finally, you can also keep the table decor simple and minimalistic, and keep the focus on an elaborate centre piece.
Don’t forget to add place setting names for your guests!
Here are a few of my picks for a stylishly spooky Halloween table.
Insider Tip: Use dark-colored linens and textures like lace, velvet, and gauze for an upscale haunted vibe.
4. Offer a Spooky Menu
Design a menu that is both delicious and themed. Consider serving appetizers like “mummy-wrapped” hot dogs or “witches’ fingers” (breadsticks shaped like fingers).
Desserts can be just as fun: try cupcakes topped with edible eyeballs or ghost-shaped cookies. Don’t forget the drinks! Brew up some “witches’ punch” with dry ice or create themed cocktails like “vampire blood” (pomegranate martini) or “poison apple” (apple cider with a spooky twist).
And don’t forget treats for the kids!
And a “vomiting pumpkin “🎃 never loses its appeal for all ages!
You can find some Halloween themed food recipes here.
And the Halloween Themed Cocktails
And of course, don’t forget to make sure the drinks are Halloween themed too!
Create a focal point with a stylishly spooky Halloween centre piece
Make a spooky centre piece to create a focal point above the fireplace, on the coffee table, on the dining table or any place you want to draw the eye.
Here are a few of my favorite centre piece picks. Just click on the image to find out more.
If you don’t want to invest too much time or money, you could simply carve out a big Jack O’ Lantern
5. Plan Themed Activities
Keep your guests entertained with games and activities. Some ideas include:
Costume Contest: Offer prizes for the best costume, funniest, or most creative.
Pumpkin Carving Station: Provide pumpkins and tools for guests to create their own spooky designs.
Scavenger Hunt: Hide themed items around the house or yard for guests to find.
Photo Booth: Set up a spooky backdrop with props for guests to take memorable photos.
Insider Tip: Tailor activities to your audience; for adults, try murder mystery games, and for kids, stick to crafts and simple games like bobbing for apples.
6. Create a Killer Playlist
The right soundtrack will keep your guests in the Halloween spirit all night long. Mix classic Halloween songs like “Thriller” and “Monster Mash” with modern hits and eerie sound effects. If you’re aiming for a sophisticated vibe, use instrumental or classical music with darker tones to create a chilling atmosphere.
7. Send Guests Home with Treats
No Halloween party is complete without a little trick-or-treating! Prepare themed party favors, like bags of candy, mini pumpkins, or spooky keepsakes like glow-in-the-dark jewelry or candles.
Insider Tip: Personalized treats or DIY take-home items can add a special touch, like mini cauldrons filled with candy.
