Make 2021 Your Best Year Ever

Well, 2020 has certainly been a crazy year, and maybe with all the stress and uncertainty you’ve become sidetracked from your goals and dreams in life! But, the good news is that no matter how 2020 went, you can still make 2021 your best year ever!

Yes, we are still in the middle of a pandemic and everything is still a bit chaotic and uncertain, but that doesn’t mean that you have to give up on your dreams and your ideal life.

make 2021 your best year ever

No matter where you are right now, the beginning of 2021 is the perfect time to start taking action towards your dreams and feel more happiness and fulfillment in everything you do!

How to set goals for 2021

What are your goals and objectives for the next year? If you haven’t already set your goals/ New Year Resolutions, here are my top tips.

make 2021 your best year ever

Start work on your goals in February

OK, So I know this first one sounds really strange and the opposite of what you would expect. But, trust me, there is a valid explanation.

We are all tired and a bit frazzled in January – we have probably overeaten, maybe drunk a bit more than usual and are very possibly sleep deprived too! These are really not the best conditions to start tackling new goals and there is every chance that we are just setting ourselves up for failure!

Now, I’m not suggesting you do nothing in January – far from it – I’m suggesting you use January to prepare yourself mentally and physically for the year ahead so you hit the ground running in February. Take time to recharge your batteries and reflect on the last year.

a) clean out the clutter

First up, take some time to declutter (physically and mentally). In order to move forward we need to clear out the past. So, take some time to clear your desk, get organised, declutter the house, declutter your closet and also declutter your mind!

Clear out any negativity that will hold you back. Let go of any anger, hurt or resentment over past failures and get ready to tackle 2021 ‘all-in’.

b) lay the foundations for success

Then, get prepared to tackle your goals – I would suggest January is a good time to reflect on your goals, and start to lay the foundations for success.

Remember that a year is a marathon and not a sprint, so take this month to set yourself up rather than sprinting into the New Year full of good intentions only to be ‘burned out’ by March!

So, reflect on the past and the future and think about where and who you want to be. Start to think about the tools you will need to achieve your goals. Maybe, you will need to invest in a planner, maybe you want to investigate gym memberships (depending on your location) or fitness apps. Take some time to think if the image you are portraying is the one you want people to see, and if not, why not? Perhaps, you need to invest in better quality clothes or perhaps you just need to work on co-ordinating your clothes.

If you’re tired, frazzled and a little bloated after New Year, don’t try to jump straight into a full fitness program, but catch up on sleep, exercise a little more, eat a little healthier…. you will then be in a better place to tackle big changes in February.

Set realistic goals

Make sure to set realistic, achievable goals. If you’re currently a couch potato, it is unlikely you will be able to run a marathon in three months time, and setting that as a goal will only depress you and reduce your motivation.

Don’t try to do too much too quickly. It’s hard enough to change one small bad habit/ adopt one new good habit without trying to tackle too many changes at once.

Instead, set a realistic goal for a shorter time frame and then review when you have achieved it.

Make sure to be specific and set a deadline

If you don’t set specific goals, how will you know if you’ve achieved them? It seems obvious but state what and by when!

For example, I want to be fitter is not a good goal, but I want to complete a half marathon by 30th June 2021 is!

Make sure you have a measurement system in place.

Goals should be specific and measurable. You can’t improve what you can’t measure so make sure that you include a daily/ weekly and/or monthly measurement tool/ system.

But remember that we are not perfect, we are human and life happens. So, don’t beat yourself up if you don’t meet your goals – just accept that it’s a normal part of life and carry on.

Persistence will win out every time. And, we all evolve at our own rate, so don’t compare yourself to others. Just review the progress you have made, and value progress over perfection!

Create your dream life in 2021

We can change our lives. We can do, have, and be exactly what we wish.

Make 2021 your best year ever

So, whilst this has been a very strange year, in my case it has certainly not been unproductive! And, I want you to remember that whatever 2021 throws at you, we ALWAYS have a choice! (see here).

While we cannot control many of the events that happen in our lives, we can ALWAYS control how we react to them. And, that how we react determines the outcome we get.

So instead of letting the pandemic take away your control, I encourage you to take back control and choose how you want to live your life. We may have to adapt but that is part of life and when you focus on the positive and step out of your comfort zone, that’s when the magic happens!

So, join me in saying “goodbye” and “good riddance” to 2020 and jumpstart your new path to success, contentment and fulfilment!

  5. Wonderful advice on making 2021 a great year. I love what you said about starting easy in January. We cannot do all at once. Many people try to achieve everything in the first month of the new year but that only causes them to burn out. It is better to start slow and speed up in February. I agree with you that setting realistic goals is important. Congrats on this new step in your life. I’m sure you’ll be the best life couch!

  8. Such useful tips here! I think a lot of people got side tracked in 2020 such an awful year. And there have been so many changes and I do not think we will fully go back to normal and the impact that the virus has had on the economy and how business is done. I think the pandemic is a fore shadower of what is coming with 5G, working from home, and AI and automation wiping out %40 of jobs in the next 9 years. Many people are going to have to reinvent themselves multiple times in their work lives and even then…a living wage may be the new normal for huge portions of the working public.

Yes, 2020 was certainly a year full of changes and I do not think that we will be able to go back to the ‘old’ normal. And, I agree that we are going to have to be open to change and willing to reinvent ourselves in order to thrive!
