Welcome back to The Velvet Runway and this feature about Maxi Skirts and Seals. This week-end, I went to La Jolla, where it’s pupping season, and the beaches are covered with mums and their pups. So, I wanted to share some of the cute photos of the seal pups with you, and also my maxi skirt OOTD.
Maxi skirts and seals
It’s an incredible experience to be so close to these beautiful animals in their natural habitat, and they seem completely unbothered by the human presence. Three of them were lying across the bottom of the steps, so you had to literally step over them to get to the beach.
This is the first time I’ve worn a maxi-skirt and I really love it. It’s incredibly comfy, easy to wear and can be dressed up for evening (with a change of shoes, some jewelry and a jacket).
In the day, I just paired this skirt from Ooberswank, (which is still available at Bloomingdales outlet stores, but not on-line, although the brand is available here), with a simple black tee, black pumps and black sunglasses from Givenchy.
So, more about the seals. Every year, from mid December, the mum seals come up onto the beaches off the California coast to have their pups, which are usually born between February and March, and the beaches are literally covered with mums and their pups during this period.
Having watched the seals for a short while, it’s easy to see that the mums and their pups have their individual personalities, just like we do!
Some mums are very protective and are lying right next to their seal, sometimes with a flipper placed protectively over them, and others seem to have a more relaxed approach to parenting. I watched one pup take what appeared to be its first dip in the ocean (a bit scary as it seemed to be struggling against the waves to begin with but it made it back to the beach!), while mum slept through the whole adventure!
Some pups, however, seem more sleepy than adventurous!
And others are more solitary creatures!
So, finally a couple more pictures of maxi skirts to finish the post.
I hope you have enjoyed seeing the seals. If you get the chance to visit the California coast during pupping season, it is definitely an experience you shouldn’t miss!
