Prioritizing Your Health and Wellness: A Holistic Approach

Welcome back to The Velvet Runway and this feature about Prioritizing Your Health and Wellness: A Holistic Approach.

This month we have been focusing on health and wellness with posts such as health and wellness tips for travellers, reasons to incorporate yoga into your daily routine, and exploring how to transition to a plant-based diet among others. So, to finish the month, I wanted to share a round-up feature that summarizes a holistic approach to Health and Wellness.

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to neglect our well-being as we juggle multiple responsibilities and obligations. However, taking care of our health is essential for living a fulfilling and balanced life. By prioritizing physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual health, we can cultivate resilience, happiness, and vitality. Below we are taking a look at Why and How you should prioritize each aspect of your health.

Prioritizing Your Health and Wellness: A Holistic Approach

The term “holism” refers to the theory that all parts of a whole are intimately interconnected. According to holism (from the Greek “holo,” meaning “whole”), it’s a mistake to study just one part, or even multiple parts separately, if we really want to understand how they work together. Applied to health, holism means treating the whole person — taking into account more than just the physical symptoms of disease or injury.

Holistic health covers Mind (Emotional and Mental Health); Body (Physical health) and Soul (Spiritual Health) and how together they shape one’s health outcomes and well-being.

1. Prioritizing your Physical Health and Wellness

Why it’s Important to Prioritize your Physical Health.

Prioritizing Your Health and Wellness: A Holistic Approach

Physical health is crucial for overall well-being and quality of life and prioritizing physical health is not only essential for reducing the risk of chronic diseases and other health complications but it can also help to boost self-esteem and self-confidence.

Here are several reasons why physical health is important:

  • Prevention of Chronic Diseases: Maintaining physical health through regular exercise, balanced nutrition, and healthy lifestyle choices can help prevent a range of chronic diseases such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and certain cancers.
  • Enhanced Immune Function: Physical health plays a crucial role in supporting a strong immune system, which helps protect the body against infections, illnesses, and diseases.
  • Improved Cardiovascular Health: Regular physical activity, such as aerobic exercise and strength training, strengthens the heart and cardiovascular system, improving circulation, lowering blood pressure, and reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke.
  • Weight Management: Regular exercise and healthy eating also contribute to maintaining a healthy weight.

  • Enhanced Mental Health: Physical activity has been shown to have numerous mental health benefits, including reducing symptoms of anxiety, depression, and stress. Exercise releases endorphins, neurotransmitters that promote feelings of well-being and happiness.
  • Increased Energy Levels: Regular physical activity boosts energy levels, improves stamina, and enhances overall vitality.
  • Improved Sleep Quality: Physical activity and regular exercise can improve sleep quality and duration, leading to better overall physical and mental health.
  • Stronger Muscles and Bones: Regular exercise, particularly strength training and weight-bearing activities, helps build and maintain strong muscles and bones, reducing the risk of osteoporosis and age-related muscle loss.
  • Better Joint Health and Flexibility: Physical activity and regular movement help maintain joint health and flexibility, reducing the risk of joint stiffness, pain, and injury. Activities such as stretching, yoga, and tai chi can improve flexibility and range of motion.
  • Longevity and Quality of Life: Prioritizing physical health can lead to a longer, healthier life with improved overall quality of life.

  • Follow a Nutritious Diet: Fuel your body with a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Minimize processed foods, sugary snacks, and excessive caffeine or alcohol consumption.
  • Make sure you get Adequate Sleep: Prioritize quality sleep by establishing a consistent bedtime routine, creating a restful sleep environment, and aiming for 7-9 hours of sleep each night.
  • Program Regular Check-ups: Schedule regular health check-ups and screenings with your healthcare provider to monitor your physical health, detect any potential issues early, and receive personalized recommendations for preventive care. Make sure to include a regular check-up with a dermatologist and a dentist.
  • Stay Hydrated: Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day, aiming for at least 8-10 glasses or more depending on your activity level and climate.
  • Practice good hygiene: Regularly wash your hands, maintain oral hygiene, and follow recommended health practices to prevent illness and promote overall well-being.
