Welcome back to the Velvet Runway and this feature about Ten planet friendly ways to celebrate Earth Day 2024.
As Earth Day 2024 approaches, it’s a time for reflection and action towards a more sustainable future. This global event, celebrated annually on April 22, encourages people to be environmentally conscious and to appreciate the beauty and diversity of our planet.
First held on April 22, 1970, Earth Day now incorporates a wide range of events coordinated globally by Earthday.org and involving over 1 billion people in more than 193 countries.
The official theme for 2024 is “Planet vs. Plastics“.
Earth Day is a special day that reminds us of the importance of taking care of our planet. It is a time to reflect on our actions and make positive changes to protect and preserve the environment.
Ten planet friendly ways to celebrate Earth Day 2024
There are many ways to celebrate Earth Day 2024 and show your support for the environment. Here are some ideas:
1 . Practice the 3 R’s (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle)
Practicing the 3 R’s on Earth Day is an effective way to minimize waste and make a positive impact on the environment. Here are some specific ways to incorporate these practices into your daily life:
1. Reduce
- Minimize single-use plastics: Carry a reusable water bottle, coffee mug, and shopping bag with you to avoid using disposable alternatives.
- Opt for bulk purchases: Buy in bulk to reduce packaging waste. Choose products with minimal packaging or items that come in recyclable containers.
- Use digital alternatives: Reduce paper waste by opting for digital documents, e-tickets, and online subscriptions instead of paper copies.
- Conserve energy: Turn off lights and unplug electronics when not in use. Choose energy-efficient appliances and use natural lighting whenever possible.
2. Reuse:
- Repurpose items: Give new life to old items by repurposing them. For example, use glass jars as storage containers, turn old t-shirts into cleaning rags, or transform cardboard boxes into organizers.
- Donate or sell: Instead of throwing away items you no longer need, consider donating them to charities or selling them online. Someone else may find value in them.
- Use reusable products: Switch to reusable alternatives such as cloth napkins, beeswax wraps instead of plastic wrap, and rechargeable batteries instead of disposable ones.
3. Recycle:
- Educate yourself about your local recycling guidelines : Separate recyclables from non-recyclables and rinse containers before recycling.
- Recycle electronics and hazardous waste: Many communities have special programs or drop-off locations for recycling electronics, batteries, and hazardous materials like paint or chemicals. Take advantage of these resources.
- Buy recycled products: Support the recycling industry by purchasing products made from recycled materials. Look for labels and certifications that indicate recycled content.
Remember, practicing the 3 R’s is not limited to Earth Day alone. Make these habits part of your daily routine to minimize waste and contribute to a more sustainable future.
2. Plant a Tree
One of the most impactful ways to celebrate Earth Day is by planting a tree. Deforestation is one of the biggest environmental threats right now, and if everyone were to plant a single tree, we’d contribute billions of trees back into the environment. If you can’t plant a tree yourself, you can always donate to a tree-planting project, such as “Plant a Billion Trees”.
3. Burn Calories Not Fuel
Use environmentally friendly transportation alternatives, such as walking or biking. These transportation methods not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions but also encourage a healthier lifestyle. And, if you have a dog, they will enjoy it too!
Consider organizing a “Bike to Work” or “Walk to School” day in your community, challenging participants to use greener transportation options.
If you live too far from work to walk or cycle, then consider leaving the car at home and using public transport or “car sharing”. Research shows that car sharing results in fewer cars on the road, which means fewer greenhouse emissions, and also less noise pollution.
4. Adopt a Plant-Based Diet
The meat industry is one of the main contributors to greenhouse gas emissions. Adopting a plant-based diet, even if it’s just for a day or a meal each week, can reduce your carbon footprint, as well as being a healthier lifestyle choice.
People who follow a plant-based diet account for 75 percent less in greenhouse gas emissions than those who eat more than 3.5 ounces of meat a day, and a vegan diet also results in significantly less harm to land, water and biodiversity, according to new research from the University of Oxford.
5. Go Green in the Garden
As Spring approaches, make sure that your garden is environmentally friendly. Plant some flowers and get a pretty, beautifully fragrant garden, and plant some vegetables so that you can grow your own produce. Here’s a guide with essential tips to starting a Spring Garden.
If you have a garden or even a small balcony, make sure to embrace sustainable gardening practices. Start composting to reduce food waste, grow your own organic fruits and vegetables, and create a haven for pollinators by planting native flowers.
6. Volunteer for a Clean-up and take time to connect with nature.
Join a local environmental organization or community group for a clean-up event. Whether it’s a beach, park, or river, participating in a clean-up effort helps preserve natural habitats, protect wildlife, and maintain the beauty of our surroundings.
Take time to connect with nature. Go for a hike, have a picnic in the park, or simply relax outdoors. Appreciating the beauty of the natural world reminds us why it’s essential to protect it.
7. Support Local Farmers and Businesses
Choose to support local businesses that prioritize sustainability and eco-friendly practices. Buy organic and locally grown food, and choose products with minimal packaging.
8. Opt for Slow Fashion
The Fashion Industry is also one of the most pollution industries, with Fashion production making up 10% of humanity’s carbon emissions. What’s more, 85% of all textiles go to the dump each year (UNECE, 2018), and washing some types of clothes sends significant amount of microplastics into the ocean.
Consumer choices have a significant impact on the environment, and by choosing to buy from sustainable brands, you are supporting eco-friendly practices. Look for products with eco-certifications, and consider the environmental policies of the companies you support.
Slow fashion prioritizes eco-friendly materials, such as organic cotton, hemp, and recycled fibers, which have lower environmental footprints compared to conventional fabrics. It also promotes mindful consumption and discourages the culture of fast fashion, which encourages disposable clothing and rapid turnover of trends.
By investing in high-quality, timeless pieces that are designed to last, consumers can reduce textile waste and also create a wardrobe that is elegant and classy.
My favorite sustainable fashion brands include Reformation, Eileen Fisher, Sézane, Gaâla, Monica Vinader and Aspiga; and have a look below for some of my favorite picks.
After all, if I can help the planet, and upgrade my wardrobe at the same time, why wouldn’t I?
9. Conserve Energy and Water Usage
Conserving energy is a critical component of Earth Day efforts and sustainability initiatives. By reducing energy consumption, you can minimize greenhouse gas emissions, combat climate change, and preserve natural resources.
Energy production often relies on the extraction and consumption of finite natural resources, such as fossil fuels and minerals. Conserving energy reduces the demand for these resources and helps preserve ecosystems, habitats, and biodiversity.
Conserving energy not only benefits the environment but also saves you money, and fortunately, there are many simple ways to cut down on this energy consumption.
Simple actions like fixing leaks, taking shorter showers, turning off lights and unplugging electronic devices when not in use, and using energy-efficient appliances can save water and energy.
Don’t forget to adjust your thermostat to save energy and consider using renewable energy sources like solar panels if possible.
These seemingly insignificant changes, when multiplied across millions of households, can lead to significant environmental benefits.
10. Travel Sustainably
Traveling sustainably is crucial for minimizing the negative impact of tourism on the environment, local communities, and cultural heritage.
By adopting eco-friendly practices such as reducing carbon emissions, supporting local economies, respecting wildlife, minimizing waste, and engaging in meaningful cultural exchanges, sustainable travelers contribute to environmental conservation, promote responsible tourism, and foster global citizenship.
Sustainable travel not only enriches personal experiences but also empowers individuals to make positive contributions towards a more equitable and sustainable world. You can reduce your carbon footprint and minimise your impact on the environment by making conscious choices, whether that means flying less or opting for eco-friendly accommodation.
