A winter fairytale – the Baden-Baden Christmas Market
The Baden-Baden Christmas Market for 2024 will officially open on November 21 and run until January 6, 2025. With over a month of festive activities, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to experience the market, whether you’re planning a romantic weekend getaway or a family-friendly holiday adventure.
Why Go to the Baden-Baden Christmas Market
Baden-Baden, Europe’s hidden gem, draws in guests from all over the world to visit its enchanting Christmas Market. Here, already the pre-Christmas season is very special.
The Baden-Baden Christmas Market isn’t just a market—it’s a celebration of the season, combining old-world charm with the elegance of this renowned spa town.
Situated at the entrance of Baden-Baden’s splendid parks and gardens “Lichtentaler Allee”, this Christmas Market, (“Christkindelsmarkt“), gives visitors the feeling they have been transported into a romantic winter fairytale. So, what makes it so special?
Read on to find out why the “Christkindelsmarkt” in Baden-Baden is like no other Christmas market.
Indulge in an extraordinary experience for all senses: almost 100 festively decorated huts and stalls sell unique handicrafts, anything from wooden toys to traditional German Christmas tree decorations and precious gift items, such as decorative candles and delicate cashmere scarves.
Picture the magical setting
The market is beautifully set against the backdrop of Baden-Baden’s historic architecture and the Kurhaus, which adds a fairytale-like ambiance. Twinkling lights, a giant Christmas tree, and festively decorated stalls create an unforgettable holiday atmosphere.
The market dazzles with festive lights, from the glow of fairy lights strung along the wooden chalets to the grand, twinkling Christmas tree in the heart of the market. The iconic Kurhaus and its surroundings are beautifully illuminated, creating a picture-perfect holiday scene.
Stalls are adorned with garlands, ornaments, and red-and-green holiday decorations, while snow-covered rooftops (if you’re lucky) add a magical touch. As you stroll through the market, your eyes will be drawn to the colorful crafts and cheerful performers spreading holiday joy.
Smell the delicious aromas
The aroma at the Baden-Baden Christmas Market is heavenly. Imagine the scent of mulled wine steeped with cinnamon, cloves, and oranges drifting through the air. You’ll smell roasted chestnuts, sweet and nutty, mingling with the rich scent of freshly baked gingerbread and caramelized almonds.
There’s the smoky fragrance of sizzling sausages, wood-fired Flammekuchen, and warm pretzels, alongside the sweet, buttery scent of pastries and cakes. Even the cool winter air carries a crisp, piney fragrance from the nearby Black Forest trees.
Listen to the Sounds of Christmas
The sound of Christmas carols fills the air, played live by brass bands or sung by local choirs. There’s also the cheerful hum of visitors chatting and laughing as they shop or enjoy a warm drink. You’ll hear the sizzling of bratwurst on grills, the clinking of Glühwein mugs as people toast the season, and the joyful chimes from nearby church bells. Street musicians often add to the festive vibe, playing traditional holiday songs on instruments like violins and accordions.
Taste the traditional German festive food and drink
The market is a culinary delight, offering traditional German and festive holiday foods. Warm up with a mug of Glühwein or Kinderpunsch (a non-alcoholic, spiced fruit punch) as you savor the flavors of bratwurst, crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside.
Sample fresh-baked Lebkuchen, bursting with spices, or nibble on delicious pretzels. Sweet treats include chocolate-covered fruits, Schokoküsse (marshmallow-filled chocolate kisses), and slices of decadent Black Forest cake. Every bite is a taste of holiday joy, warming you from the inside out.
Or why not visit one of the 11 gourmet igloos at the Christmas Market and feast on fondue and raclette. These pop-up restaurants present a “fonduelette menu“, a combination of meat fondue and raclette, perfectly rounded off with regional wines. The gourmet igloos offer space for a maximum of 8 guests and can be booked online for groups of 4 or more.
Feel the textures of the gifts and the warmth of the Glühwein
Feel the warmth of a steaming Glühwein mug in your hands, a comforting contrast to the chilly surroundings. Run your fingers over soft, woolen scarves, the smooth surface of hand-carved wooden ornaments, or the rough texture of traditional ceramics.
The Baden-Baden Christmas Market is truly an extraordinary experience for all your senses.
Seasonal fun for the entire family
A highlight especially for the little ones every year is the arrival of Saint Nikolaus on 6 December who hands out gifts to all children.
The market features attractions for all ages, including a traditional carousel and visits from Santa Claus. There are also craft workshops and storytelling sessions for children, making it a perfect outing for families.
But the family fun does not stop here. Another unique attraction of the Christmas Market in Baden-Baden is the illuminated alley of colossal church windows painted by the pupils of the city. The popular “Fairytale Lane” where famous German fairytales are shown on huge posters is an impressive attraction for the whole family.
So is the “Ice Arena”, an open-air ice skating rink, only a few steps away from the Christmas Market. Here, visitors can enjoy ice skating whilst enjoying seasonal background music and flood lights in all colors to enhance the fun. Ice skates can be rented on-site. Various bars and restaurants around the “Ice Arena” invite you to take a break and warm up again from the inside in a relaxed and cozy atmosphere.
What to Expect
As you wander through the market’s picturesque stalls, you’ll discover a delightful array of holiday offerings. Expect to be dazzled by over 100 wooden chalets selling everything from handcrafted gifts to seasonal treats. There are also plenty of festive decorations and lights, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.
Be sure to stop by the illuminated ice rink and take in the festive ice-skating shows, or take a romantic stroll through the “Allee of Lights,” a captivating pathway lit with thousands of fairy lights. Live music and performances take place daily, adding a joyful soundtrack to your holiday shopping.

Timing: The market typically opens from late November to late December, so plan your visit accordingly. Early evenings are particularly magical, as the lights come on and the market is bustling with activity.
Dress Warmly: The weather in Baden-Baden in December can be quite cold, with temperatures often ranging from -2°C to 7°C (28°F to 45°F). Make sure to dress in layers so you can adjust to the temperature, especially if you’re moving between indoor and outdoor areas. A warm, waterproof coat is essential, especially if there’s a chance of rain or snow. You’ll be doing a lot of walking and standing, so opt for comfortable, warm, and waterproof boots or shoes. Don’t forget warm gloves and a scarf to protect against the chilly breeze, and thermal socks can also make a big difference on colder days.
