Welcome back to The Velvet Runway and this feature about What to Expect as a First-Time Cruiser.
Thinking about booking a cruise – or are you already excitedly waiting for yours to set off in the near future? Either or, not knowing what’s to come and what to expect can both be exhilarating and flustering at the same time. But that’s okay, and honestly, half of the fun!
For those who are new to cruising, it’s only natural to have questions and uncertainties about travelling at sea, so here is a tiny little guide on what to expect as a first-time cruiser – ensuring your maiden voyage is going to be smooth sailing.
What to Expect as a First-Time Cruiser
Choose the Right Cruise for You
Now, obviously, this is a bit easier said than done if you don’t know yet what you are really looking for. And with a plethora of options available, ranging from family-friendly mega-ships to intimate river cruises, start by figuring out your preferences, interests, and budget.
Known and well-established providers such as MSC Cruises, Noble Caledonia, or Viking Ocean Cruises are usually always a safe bet, but make sure to research different lines, destinations, and onboard amenities to find the perfect fit for your travel style.
Once you’ve booked your cruise, start the prep! It’s always a good idea to familiarise yourself with the cruise itinerary, available activities, and shore excursions that are available at each port call. Make sure you pack accordingly – taking into account the dress code and climate, both on board and ashore. Don’t forget travel documents such as passports, visas (if required), and any necessary medical or travel insurance.
Embarkation
The check-in procedures may vary depending on the cruise line and port, but generally, you’ll need to present your boarding pass, passport, and any required health documentation. Once you’ve done that, you’ll proceed through security screening before stepping aboard your floating holiday home.
It’s a bit like the procedures in an airport, just that you will, well, enter a ship instead. It’s crucial that you allow yourself plenty of time to get there in time. Most lines will need you to arrive between one and two hours before embarkation. Take that time seriously – you don’t want to miss out on the check-in window!
Life Onboard & Ports of Call
A cruise ship is basically an enormous resort, sporting endless possibilities and experiences. Fine gourmet dining, Broadway-style shows, relaxing spa treatments and more – there is something for everyone to enjoy. Definitely make sure to take advantage of onboard facilities such as pools, fitness centres, and the enrichment programs. With a lot of cruises being all-inclusive, they are literally there for you to utilise them – so don’t be shy! Though, of course, if you prefer simply unwinding with a book on deck as you sail away, that’s valid, too.
The biggest highlights of any cruise are the opportunities to explore the diverse destinations and cultures ashore. Go forth and do whatever it is your heart desires – but make sure that you return to the ship on time. It won’t wait for latecomers!
Final words on What to Expect as a First-Time Cruiser
I’d generally recommend a shorter itinerary for your first one. A handful of days is more than enough to get a feeling for cruises and to see if you like it – and short enough to be back home in a couple of nights if it’s something that you end up not enjoying at all.
