What to wear in Paris in Summer 2024 : An Insider’s Guide

If you’re wondering What to wear in Paris in Summer 2024, look no further than our guide by Parisian, Hannah REES! With summer just around the corner (officially June 21st), it’s important to start thinking about the perfect wardrobe for summer days. And where better to find inspiration than on the streets of Paris?

Whether you’re actually planning a trip to the French capital in the next few months, or just want to transition into summer “à la parisienne”, here’s an insider’s guide to what to wear in Paris in Summer 2024, and don’t forget to have a look at our guide to the brands that French Women Love.

What to wear in Paris in Summer 2024 : An Insider’s Guide

Summer in Paris is dreamy and as the days lengthen and restaurant terraces fill with people enjoying a sunny afternoon, it’s the perfect time of year to show off your fantastic fashion sense. But don’t forget that the French are some of the toughest critics in the world, so if you need a few tips on what to wear this summer in Paris, here’s a list of some wardrobe essentials to look like a true Parisienne.

I. A few things to bear in mind before thinking of what to wear in Paris in summer 2024.

Firstly, Summer in Paris means milder temperatures and longer days, giving you a better opportunity to explore the wonderful city and discover all it has to offer. That said, the weather can be unpredictable, so if you’re planning a trip there, it’s important to check the weather forecast in advance, and adjust your packing list accordingly, as you can be faced with anything from glorious sunshine to a violent downpour. And all in a single day.

Parisiennes always take this into account and dress accordingly, wearing layers and practical clothes to avoid any surprises. Pick breathable fabrics such as cotton and linen to combat the heat, and pack lightweight layers such as blouses, shirts, and cardigans that can easily be added or removed as temperatures fluctuate during the day.

It’s also always a good idea to pack a light rain jacket and/or a compact umbrella for peace of mind. But, at the same time, don’t forget sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun’s rays.

Secondly, to be a true parisienne, you need clothes that you can wear and cherish for the rest of your life, so it’s essential that your wardrobe include classic pieces made from high-quality natural fabrics like linen, silk, cotton and wool in neutral colours like grey, navy, cream and black.

Finally, tailoring is important. Don’t hesitate to alter your clothes if necessary to make them as flattering as possible. Remember that it’s you who should wear your clothes, not the other way round, and although the French look is all about being effortless, it does require attention to detail.

II. 15 Essential items to wear in Paris in Summer 2024

The Paris Summer staples include a well-fitted pair of high-waisted shorts, linen trousers, , a classic “T-shirt” , an oversized shirt, a midi skirt, well-tailored capri trousers, a LBD, a shift dress, a wrap dress and a lightweight cardigan, accessorised with a scarf, sunglasses, a straw basket bag and Espadrilles or sling-back heels. But the most essential item worn by any Parisienne is, of course, confidence!

1: Espadrilles.

Although they originated in the Catalan regions of Spain, espadrilles have long been associated with French girls, probably thanks to Yves Saint Laurent, who popularised the shoe by including it in his collections, as well as Brigitte Bardot and Catherine Deneuve, who were often seen sporting a pair.

The great thing about these shoes is that they combine comfort and elegance, making them perfect for exploring the cobbled streets of Paris or for a leisurely picnic in one of the city’s parks, such as the Jardin du Luxembourg or Parc Monceau.

And when it comes to what to wear them with, they go with everything, but denim jeans or a wrap dress make for particularly fashionable looks.

2:  High-waisted shorts.

What to wear in Paris in Summer 2024

Whether you want to show off your legs or just beat the summer heat, shorts are always a good idea and they’re particularly on trend this season. Avoid pairing them with a crop top, as you’ll already be showing off a lot of leg, so opt instead for a loose shirt that you can casually tuck into your shorts, or better still, a classic T-shirt and a simple leather belt (remember, simplicity is the mot d’ordre of the French!).

With an outfit like this, you’ll blend in with the locals having brunch in a chic café in the Marais. Have a look at our top picks above and just click on the image to find out more.

3: Capri trousers.

Although no one can wear Capri trousers like Audrey Hepburn did in “Roman Holiday“, it’s still worth owning a pair or two, as they can make any look more stylish and they’re suitable for all occasions.

If you’re thinking of getting capri trousers, it’s best to invest in a neutral colour or a simple print and when pairing them, avoid clothes that are too baggy, such as an oversized t-shirt or jacket, as this could create a disproportionate silhouette.

4. A Classic T-shirt.

A classic T-shirt is perhaps the most important item in a Parisian woman’s wardrobe, as it can be paired with absolutely everything and is therefore the foundation piece on which many Parisian women build their outfits.

As a staple piece, it’s best to invest in a T-shirt made from good quality cotton that will last a long time and in a neutral colour such as blue, white, black or red (these are often favourites with French women).

5: A Shift dress.

Flawlessly elegant and infinitely versatile, the shift dress is a summer staple in every Parisian woman’s wardrobe. It is characterised by its simple, straight silhouette that hangs loosely from the shoulders and has no defined waist. It has been popularised by actresses such as Françoise Hardy and Catherine Deneuve, as well as designers such as André Courrèges and Pierre Cardin.

Pair it with simple ballet flats or kitten heels and you’ve got the perfect outfit for a leisurely stroll along the Seine on a sunny Sunday afternoon.

6: An Oversized shirt.

There’s something so simple and yet so fashionable about an oversized shirt. It looks so easy to wear and, honestly, it is. Stripes are very popular this summer so you could choose one that has colourful stripes like green or red and pair it with tailored trousers or denim shorts for a casual but polished look. And if you don’t own one, don’t worry, do like any good parisian woman and steal one from your “amoureux”.

The Max Shirt from Sézane (available in 15 colours and prints), see above is the perfect oversize shirt to complete your summer wardrobe.

7: A Wrap dress (with a bathing suit underneath, of course!).

Like the oversized shirt, there’s something so simple about the wrap dress. It’s so easy to put on and take off, but unlike the shirt, it seems to flatter all body shapes. It was popularised by fashion designer Diane von Fürstenberg in the 1970s and has since taken the fashion world by storm.

You can pair it with almost anything, and if you’re planning a day at the beach or by the pool, it’s the perfect garment to wear over your swimming costume for an effortless transition.

8: Midi skirt.

If the mini skirt is cute and fun, the midi skirt is its elegant big sister and, whatever you pair it with, it seems to create the perfect sophisticated summer look.

Typically, a midi skirt falls between the knee and the ankle and comes in a variety of styles, including A-line, pencil, pleated, flared, wrap and more, so there is sure to be one to flatter your body shape. For an easy look, pair it with a simple T-shirt, a belt and some espadrilles.

9: A straw basket bag

There’s no better way to transport a picnic to your favourite Parisian park than in a straw basket bag. And if you’re taking advantage of your stay in Paris to head to nearby beaches like Deauville, La Baule or Le Touquet, a straw basket bag makes the ideal beach bag. They come in all shapes and sizes, from small clutch-style bags to large tote bags.

10: A Knitted cardigan (for chilly summer nights).

Summer is usually synonymous with warm days, but it can also mean cool evenings and nights (summer nights in Paris tend to go on…). And the best way to remedy this is with a knitted cardigan that you can slip over your outfit.

Because chances are it won’t be that cold, you can choose lightweight fabrics for a layered piece that’s both cosy and chic, perfect for those Parisian nights dancing on the banks of the Seine.

11: Slingback heels

Slingback heels are a timeless and elegant footwear choice, offering a balance between style and comfort.

It’s best to choose a pair made from good quality leather, as they will last longer, and to opt for a small or medium height heel, so that they are comfortable enough to walk around Paris in.

12: Wide-legged linen trousers

Well-cut linen pants are very stylish as well as practical to walk around Paris. Pair them with a cotton or linen T-shirt for a casual look, and dress them up with a lightweight vest or blazer.

13: A LBD

Parisian nights call for a touch of glamour, even in summer. Be prepared for a romantic dinner or a night out with a little black dress (LBD), paired with statement jewellry and a clutch bag.

A LBD is always a good idea, as it can easily be dressed up or down and can be made to look fabulous for just about any occasion at any time of year.

It has become a timeless fashion favourite, thanks to Coco Chanel, who made it a must-have for many women. See our top picks above and just click on the relevant image to find out more.

14: Accessorize Like a Parisian

Accessories can elevate your outfit and give it that unmistakable Parisian flair.

  • Scarves: A light, silk scarf can be tied around your neck, worn as a headband, or even tied to your bag for an extra touch of chic.
  • Sunglasses: A stylish pair of sunglasses is a must for those sunny days. Opt for classic shapes like cat-eye or oversized frames.
  • Hats: A wide-brimmed hat can protect you from the sun and add a fashionable element to your outfit.
  • Bags: Your bag should be practical enough to carry your essentials but stylish enough to complement your outfit. Crossbody Bags are perfect for keeping your hands free while exploring the city. Choose one in a neutral color that goes with everything. For those who need a bit more space, a fashionable tote bag can hold everything from a water bottle to a guidebook.

15: Confidence

The most important thing to wear if you want to dress like a Parisienne is self-confidence! As you walk around Paris, you won’t see a single French woman who doesn’t strut around as if she weren’t herself, one of Paris’s most emblematic and unmissable attractions.
